EXHIBITing

I have had the opportunity to take part in some extraordinary and original exhibitions with OuseLife Drawing group. In some cases this has included taking an active lead in curation and promotion. I also exhibit with Riverside Arts as part of Cambridge Open Studios.

AFTER THE FALL

In May 2022, I took part in an exhibition at Ely Cathedral, for which I produced a series of twelve paintings exploring the history of the Octagon ‘After the fall’

An Ely Cathedral tour in the Octagon reveals the fascinating oak construction behind the scenes as well as information about the decorative public face of the tower: All evidence of the highly skilled team of workers required to create such a unique and ambitious rebuild. As climate change sees us at a crisis point, the availability of such magnificent oaks in 1322 feels poignant, especially as Cambridgeshire is currently the least wooded non-urban county in the country. Nevertheless, the Octagon that lifts our spirits today is also evidence of resilience in the face of catastrophe. The imagery in my work has been inspired by both the artistry and the history of the tower. The use of oil and cold wax in ‘Layers’ has enabled me to archive aspects of the towers history whilst deliberately manipulating the visibility of the imagery and text.

THE SECRET LIFE OF ELY CATHEDRAL

I was delighted to return the Cathedral's famous Prior's Door to its original glory for the first time in 850 years with the 'Christ in Majesty' Tympanum, now part of the Cathedral's permanent collection. (See photo of me with the painting before it went into position).

TO END ALL WARS

My 8 banners formed part of a dynamic art installation of 100 banners commemorating the impact of the First World War in Cambridgeshire. A section of speech written by Hugh Lupton for 'Barbed Wire for Kisses' inspired my banners and is written in the background like a diary excerpt. They all include a pheasant rising into the sky. This felt like appropriate imagery because it's overlong tail made it reminiscent of a pheonix; a symbol of hope and resurrection.

LIFE SIZE LIFE

The OuseLife group set the challenge of painting people on doors, so I chose to wrap five life size figures around mine

LIFE IN A BOX

I painted this triptych after coming across an assortment of old shoes in the attic. They aptly symbolise different stages of life, but I haven't named them individually because I like to think that they could be relevant to all stages.

Shoe Boxes, £180 each or £450 for the triptych

Oil on Canvas, 19 x 30 cm each in wood frames
